But it’s not always the best choice — and that’s by design. We evaluate each project on its own merits and recommend closed-cell only when it’s needed. For some applications, like open, dry attics, open-cell spray foam insulation may be more cost-effective and just as functional, especially when the goal is to air-seal and insulate without the additional structural benefits.
What It Costs
Closed-cell spray foam is not the cheapest insulation option — but it’s not necessarily the most expensive either. The cost ranges from $1.60 to $2.60 per board foot, depending on material, labor, and the complexity of the space. Open-cell foam, by comparison, ranges from $1.00 to $1.60 per board foot.
Rim joist projects are quoted per project after an on-site assessment. The same goes for attic and combined projects. Final pricing depends on crawl-space access, the foam thickness the assembly needs, and whether existing insulation has to be removed first — we give a firm number after we see the space.

We also consider the long-term value. If a home is expected to be occupied for many years and the insulation will be part of the building’s long-term envelope, then the higher upfront cost of closed-cell may make sense. If the project is a short-term fix or if the space is temporary — like a pole barn used for seasonal storage — then open-cell or even rigid foam board may be more appropriate.

Climate and Code: What You Need to Know
South Carolina, and specifically the Upstate including Greenville, sits in IECC Climate Zone 3A. That’s a mixed-humid zone where winter heating and summer cooling loads are both significant. The IECC requires attic insulation with R-values between R-38 and R-49. But code is the minimum, and comfort and efficiency often require going beyond it.
Closed-cell spray foam delivers roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch (confirm the exact value for your assembly and local code). That’s significantly better than open-cell foam, which delivers about R-3.5 to R-4 per inch. So, less material can do more work, especially in tight or hard-to-reach spaces.
